10 Sunniest Cities in the United States
Posted by Rich Johnson | Leave A Comment »
As compared to gloomy days, do “sunny days” put you in a good mood? If you’re like many people in San Diego County, the answer is “yes”.
In a study of more than 1,200 people, researchers found that daily weather factors such as temperature, precipitation and length of day can alter a person’s emotional state. Of all the weather factors, however, “sunshine” can have the most profound effect.
The most likely reason is because sunshine affects people in a physiological manner.
When the human brain detects sunlight, our bodies produce serotonin, a chemical which promotes happiness and well-being. By contrast, when the brain detect darkness, our bodies produce melatonin, a chemical which promotes sleep cycles.
Sunlight — quite literally — leads to happiness.
Understanding the effect of sunlight on human mood, therefore, we must consider the nation’s “sunniest cities” as more than just a novelty list. It may be a link to personal well-being, too.
From the National Climactic Data Center, these are the Top 10 Sunniest Cities in the United States :
- Yuma, AZ : Sunny on 90% of all days
- Redding, CA : Sunny on 88% of all days
- Las Vegas, NV : Sunny on 85% of all days
- Phoenix, AZ : Sunny on 85% of all days
- Tucson, AZ : Sunny on 85% of all days
- El Paso, TX : Sunny on 84% of all days
- Fresno, CA : Sunny on 79% of all days
- Reno, NV : Sunny on 79% of all days
- Flagstaff, AZ : Sunny on 78% of all days
- Sacramento, CA : Sunny on 78% of all days
The sunshine rankings of other noteworthy cities include Key West, FL (#12 with 76% sunshine); San Diego and Denver, CO (#30 with 68% sunshine); and Seattle, WA (#165 with 43% sunshine).
At the bottom of the list is Juneau. Just 30 percent of the Alaskan capital city’s days are sunny.
The complete Sunshine Rankings as listed by Metropolitan Area is available on the NCDC website.

Two important events are occurring within a week apart - one is Halloween and the other is Daylight Saving Time. Please feel free to share the valuable information below with friends and neighbors.
Halloween is this Sunday. Below are some valuable tips to keep it a fun and safe holiday:
If you have a trick-or-treater,please make sure your trick-or-treater:
1) Stays on the sidewalk for safety measures
2) Wears a non-flammable costume
3) Carries a flashlight
4) Does not eat any candy until you have a chance to examine it.
Replace any candles in Jack-o-lanterns with illuminating lights. A child’s outfit and our homes can easily burn when there is an unattended lit candle
If you are concerned regarding the candy, the Cosmetic & Famly Dentist Care, located by the Albertsons in RB (12405 RB Road) is offering FREE Halloween candy X-ray on Halloween (7-10 pm) as well as the following week (7 am – 8pm). You can call the office for more information at: 858-385-1838.
Daylight Saving Time is next weekend (November 7).
It’s that time of year again when we set our clocks back (November 7) for daylight savings time. As the old saying goes, ‘Spring forward, Fall back’.
There are many other things we should do around our home twice a year when resetting our clocks for daylight saving time. This is an excellent time to test and change the batteries not only in all your smoke alarms, but also in your carbon monoxide alarms. According to national statistics, fire strikes a home once every minute. It can take less than two minutes for a child and adult to be overcome by smoke. If you are 55 years and older, own your own home and do not currently have a working smoke alarm, you can contact the local Burn Institute at 858-541-2277 for a free smoke alarm installation.
If you do not have a carbon monoxide detector and do not plan on purchasing one, educate yourself and your family on some common, early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. (Can be caused by fuel burning appliances which are not installed properly or are not burning the fuel efficiently) Symptoms include: headache, dizziness, nausea. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms and you feel it may be due to carbon monoxide poisoning, professionals recommend you leave your home immediately, call 911 or have someone take you to an emergency room.
