Be a Part of Something Extraordinary

What a Day for the Hungry around the world!

And you can still help today….

Thousands of people trudged past Exclusive Properties Rancho Bernardo Saturday, on their way to the Church of Rancho Bernardo.  There, the goal was to help feed the starving of  Tanzania, Haiti, and right here in the USA:  The Million Meal Event.  Thousands of volunteers showed up to assemble meals kits that would feed 8 people per packet.  The goal was well on its way to succeeding by 2 pm Saturday:

There were over 260,000 meals completed, with six more hours to go on Sat. and all day Sunday, to go.   That’s where you come in.

Here is your chance to assemble meal kits consisting of dried vegetables, rice, tofu, and seasoning into Ziploc type bags.

Exclusive Properties has a booth to help sponsor the event.  Steve Rodgers stood beside me on the line, quietly assembling, undoubtedly moved by the hands-on effort.  At the end of my shift, covered in a light dusting of seasoning, back aching from standing for hours, scooping and reaching, I felt exhilarated!  So can you.  Go down there, spend an hour, and you’ll be rejuvenated!

Want to Help Haiti? What Organizations You Should Feel Safe Giving Money To…

No matter how meager our own circumstances are, we can never experience what they are going through in Haiti.  I won’t recap everything that’s available on CNN, and Voice of America but just simply send out a plea for your help. Let’s post legitimate rescue efforts for each other to contribute to.  Inevitably the lowest of the lowlife surfaces to take advantage of a situation like this, and that is doubly evil:  First because the scamster benefits, and second because those in need just lost the donation you gave unsuspectingly.

Don’t give to charities that spring up, trust the organizations you know like Red Cross, Rotary, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, Jewish Family Services, your local church or synagouge.  From Dave Brooks of RB Rotary,

Our Rotary club has asked us to send donations to our foundation, which will coordinate the fund distribution through Haitian Rotary clubs.”

From another community member, Pat O’Sullivan of Village Mail and More, if she wanted to help with collections.  Her response was very sound, “My understanding is that cash is badly needed –  Food, clothing, etc. are difficult to transport and logistics can be very difficult.”

“Catholic Relief Services has a large presence in Haiti. Donations can be sent directly via their website, http://crs.org/ or can be mailed to:  Catholic Relief Services, 228 West Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 212101-3413.  There is very little administrative cost attached to donations and almost 100% goes directly to the relief effort.  I have already sent in my donation.  The need is so great and the country so devastated, it’s hard to even imagine.  God bless them all.”
On Monday, CNN‘s Larry King will have a 2 hour special to raise money and identify resources where you can legitimately send donations without fear of them being siphoned off.
And for those of you who share the power of prayer, please remember each one of those people who have been fortunate enough to survive, those fighting for life in every corner of Port Au Prince, the hundreds of thousands of orphaned children, and those who did not survive.  And say a little prayer while you’re at it for my son, Dan, a Navy Helicopter Pilot who answered the call and went to Haiti to help.
I hope these links make it a little easier to take the action you have in your mind and heart, to help the people of Haiti.  We cannot rest easy unless we do something to help.
