Rancho Bernardo: A Planned Community – Phase One
Posted by Nancy McNabb | Currently 1 Comment »
The original developer of RANCHO BERNARDO had a vision.
He wanted to develop a community that would have recreation facilities for each neighborhood. He selected a piece of land that was in the Northern part of the City of San Diego. At the time he made this selection, Rancho Bernardo was considered “country”. His first projects were a Senior Community (Seven Oaks) for people 55 years and older. Right across Rancho Bernardo Road another community was built with no age restrictions (The Greens). The first Recreation Centers built were THE SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB and THE SEVEN OAKS COMMUNITY CENTER. Now there are approximately five more recreation centers that accommodate all the new neighborhoods that have been added. Rancho Bernardo (which is often referred to as RB) has a very busy active lifestyle. Residents are active in both San Diego activities as well as in the RB community. All the schools are part of the Poway Unified School District which is considered one of the Best in San Diego.
Rancho Bernardo has A COMMUNITY PARK that provides:
- Playing fields for different sports
- A dog park
- Recreation facilities including a tennis club, playground and a gym
- A senior center
- Hiking trails that connect to other trails going to the coast or inland plus
- Many planned activities for all the residents

The largest inside Mall in North County is just minutes away.
The TOWN CENTER has:
- Extensive shopping
- A newer library
- A small park with ponds
- A U. S. post office
- Many banks
- A branch of the San Diego Fire Department

Town center

San Diego has many beautiful gardens
There couldn’t be a better place to garden or just enjoy the wonderful world of nature than San Diego. Whether you live here, are just visiting or looking for a home in San Diego, you have many options to view gardens. Balboa Park located near the center of San Diego has many special gardens among the museums, theaters, and restaurants. Our famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park have gardens representing many types of plants. Quail Botanical Gardens features bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rain forest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes and more. It also offers ongoing events and classes that are especially interesting to young people; people still working and seniors who are living in retirement communities here in San Diego. One of the outstanding sources for gardeners in our area is the Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College which is devoted to water conservation. Please click on the links after each of the special places listed to see more details about these locations. These are just a few of San Diego gardens that are open to the public.
Private Gardens in San Diego
For the dedicated gardener who likes to share with other serious gardeners, San Diego is in the Palomar District of California Garden Clubs Inc. By clicking on this site you will be able to find the Garden Club closest to you. All of the clubs are active year round, but spring is the time that members open their gardens to the public and garden tours and plant sales are to be found in almost every community. The garden clubs are a wonderful source of garden knowledge, sharing ideas and plants and friendships.
