Senior Life Styles in Rancho Bernardo

IS RANCHO BERNARDO PRIMARILY A SENIOR COMMUMITY?
Many people think Rancho Bernardo is primarily a senior Community, but it really has a much broader mixture of residents. There are two major industrial parks plus businesses in the general area that employ many of the town’s residents. It’s easy access to major highways makes it convenient for commuting to many areas in San Diego County. The original plan was to provide good schools, recreational facilities and many styles of housing that would attract people to such a diversified community. Rancho Bernardo is part of the city of San Diego, but has its own representatives and a very active community council. The original planners saw the need for”Senior only” housing and planned two separate areas for just this purpose. This forward thinking during the planning stages of Rancho Bernardo has resulted in a very successful cosmopolitan place to live
SEVEN OAKS
The original planned senior community is called Seven Oaks. This community is located near the original shopping area of Rancho Bernardo and includes condos and homes that are all single level. Seven Oaks has a community center with a heated swimming pool, a work out center, a library, and many craft facilities. Some of the homes are located on elevated lots with views of the mountains and hills. Many homes are close to shopping, banks and the post office. One owner/resident must be 55 years or older. Additional information can be obtained on the Seven Oaks Community website.

OAKS NORTH
The second senior community is called Oaks North and was built later. It is located near a 27 hole golf course called (what else) the Oaks North Golf Course which is owned an operated by The Rancho Bernardo Inn Resort and is open to the public. The golf course is layed out in such a way that many of the condos and homes have golf course views. Some of the condos are built with two stories but the units are all on one level. There are many different kinds of living areas in Oaks North including one gated community. The Oaks North Community Center is located near the golf course and there are tennis courts and lawn bowling adjacent to the center. Please click on Oaks North Community Center for more detailed information. As in Seven Oaks, the age restriction is 55 years and older for at least one resident.
FOR THE YOUNGER SENIORS
For “empty nesters” and people who just want to scale down to a smaller house and less property there are many other areas in Rancho Bernardo, including both the 92128 and 92127 zip codes, with neighborhoods each providing their own recreation centers. In the early 1980s, for example, many patio homes were built to accommodate this kind of home owner. The Rancho Bernardo Community Park has excellent facilities with outdoor tennis courts, ball fields and hiking trails. There are two private golf courses and the Rancho Bernardo Innhas a18 hole course that is open to the public. These golf courses provide fairway views for many homes in the area. Also, views of the mountains and hills that surround Rancho Bernardo are available from many of the homes. SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITIES
There are two large senior retirement complexes that were planned later as the community grew. The Casa de las Campanas was the first of the two to be completed and provides different floor plans for residents to choose from and includes many fine amenities. It is located across from the Community Park and is operated on a purchase basis. Just click on Casa de las Campanas for more information and pictures of the facility shown below.
The Casa de las Campanas
The second facility shown below, The Remington Club, offers Independent Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. It offers different floor plans to choose from and it also has many fine amenities. The Remington Club is located near the Rancho Bernardo shopping Center in Rancho Bernardo and is operated on a rental basis. This is one major difference between the two facilities. For more detailed information click on The Remington Club.

Bernardo Heights
Bernardo Heights is a master planned community located in the heart of Rancho Bernardo. This community has lovely tree lined streets and beautiful open space areas which are well maintained by the Community Association of Bernardo Heights. Established in 1981 with a plan for the future, the main parkway allows access to over 3500 residences. If you own or lease a property in B.H. this automatically grants you membership in the Community Association of Bernardo Heights. All members pay a monthly fee for the upkeep of the landscaping and common facilities.

There are 30 plus communities ranging from large custom homes in a gated community to condos. A Private golf club called Bernardo Heights Country Club was built by the developer, and is now owned by the members. The centerpiece of this community is the recreation facility and a Private Park.

The Private Park is located in the center of the community and has four tennis courts, a tot lot, walking paths, picnic area, and a ball field. Residents can a reserve a spot for a family get together close to home.

In addition to the park, the community has an updated seven thousand square foot Bernardo Heights Community Center. For those interested in rentals there are three designated apartment complexes. The many different home styles and types of communities make for a very diversified and congenial place to live. The master planners anticipated the need for schools when developing this community so a large piece of property in Bernardo Heights was designated for a Middle School a High School and possibly a grade school. The Bernardo Heights Middle School and Rancho Bernardo High School were built several years later. The schools are part of the Poway Unified School District. This District is considered one of the best in San Diego.

San Diego Garden Lovers Share their Private Gardens

San Diego Gardeners Love to Share
Gardener’s love to share their gardens! Gardeners are able to meet another gardener and talk about gardens, plants, fertilizers, favorite nurseries, tips on the care of special plants, where to find interesting accessories etc. without ever having met before. With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to have a place to share our gardens on line. Living in the San Diego area, we find that we do have different climate zones for plants, so what one gardener can grow in their garden might not work for another gardener in another zone.
San Diego has 20 Clubs in the Palomar District
San Diego is in the Palomar District of California Garden Clubs Inc. By clicking on the link, you will be able to find the Garden Club closest to you. All the clubs are active year around, but spring is the time most clubs have Garden Tours and Plant Sales. This gives people the wonderful opportunity for Garden Lovers to see gardens that they might never see and enjoy. You can also acquire some healthy plants to grow in your own garden.
Would you like to share your Gardens?
This is the initial blog for this project to share our Private Gardens in San Diego. For all those who have a digital camera this is easy to do. Take a picture of some area of your garden, or a special plant or flower and download it to your computer and use PHOTO SHOP or some similar program that stores and fixes pictures and then share it by e-mail to nancy.mcnabb@gmail.com . If you don’t have a digital camera, find a friend who does and have them take the picture and e mail it to me. PLEASE, no people in the picture! In order to let others know in what area your garden is located, include your zip code and if you wish, a short title . This will be fun. A garden is always a work in progress that is ever changing according to the season and the whim of the person in charge. Share your garden or just enjoy other peoples gardens on this blog. Happy Gardening!!!

Rancho Bernardo: A Planned Community – Phase One

The original developer of RANCHO BERNARDO had a vision.
He wanted to develop a community that would have recreation facilities for each neighborhood. He selected a piece of land that was in the Northern part of the City of San Diego. At the time he made this selection, Rancho Bernardo was considered “country”. His first projects were a Senior Community (Seven Oaks) for people 55 years and older. Right across Rancho Bernardo Road another community was built with no age restrictions (The Greens). The first Recreation Centers built were THE SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB and THE SEVEN OAKS COMMUNITY CENTER. Now there are approximately five more recreation centers that accommodate all the new neighborhoods that have been added. Rancho Bernardo (which is often referred to as RB) has a very busy active lifestyle. Residents are active in both San Diego activities as well as in the RB community. All the schools are part of the Poway Unified School District which is considered one of the Best in San Diego.
Rancho Bernardo has A COMMUNITY PARK that provides:
- Playing fields for different sports
- A dog park
- Recreation facilities including a tennis club, playground and a gym
- A senior center
- Hiking trails that connect to other trails going to the coast or inland plus
- Many planned activities for all the residents

The largest inside Mall in North County is just minutes away.
The TOWN CENTER has:
- Extensive shopping
- A newer library
- A small park with ponds
- A U. S. post office
- Many banks
- A branch of the San Diego Fire Department
