The 5 NEW Things I Plan to do this Summer on my San Diego STAYcation

Summer is the most popular season for people to take time off and enjoy a well deserved vacation. Growing up in New Jersey, I often traveled with my family to Florida or enjoyed island cruises. Now that I am living in sunny San Diego, I am exercising a new definition of vacation.
This year, my fiance and I will be entertaining SIX DIFFERENT GROUPS of visitors. As families and friends from the East Coast parade through our lovely Del Mar abode, we are determined to fill our time with activities that are new to both our guests and ourselves.
Instead of traveling to a distant resort for a vacation, we are going to remain in San Diego for a STAY-cation. Now, you must be careful. A STAY-cation can easily turn into “just another weekend” if you don’t carefully fill it with exciting plans that you wouldn’t normally have.
To ensure that our San Diego STAY-cation is packed with enough adventure to rival any trip, I’ve come up with 5 BRAND NEW things to try this summer.
- Del Mar Races on Opening Day
- This Wednesday (July 22nd) is Opening Day at the Del Mar Race Tracks. Thousands of people will pour into the scene decked out in fabulous dresses and outrageous hats. This year, I will arrive at opening day in style on The Bounce Party Bus with 30+ friends. I can’t believe I have lived in San Diego four years and have yet to attend opening day; time to cross this off the list!
- Country Music Concert
- One of the residual effects of going to college in Virginia (James Madison University) is that I just love country music! And on August 13th I am going to my first country music concert!!! I am stoked to have tickets to see Toby Keith and Trace Adkins play at the Cricket Amphitheater. Expect to find me on the lawn singing my heart out!
- Sky Diving
- Oddly enough, I’ve always loved the feeling of falling. From roller coasters to jumping off cliffs in Jamaica, I think it’s great when my stomach flips. Ready to take it to the next level, I am going to jump out of a moving plane.
- Wicked the Musical
- Growing up in New Jersey means easy access to amazing plays in New York City. Now that I am in San Diego, I feel Broadway deprived. When I heard that Wicked the Musical was coming to our pretty city, I knew this was a night out that had to happen. Even more exciting, our very own Eileen Schwartz’s daughter will be playing Glenda! Amazing!
- Hot Air Balloon Ride
- Every day tons of hot air balloons take off from a field near our home. I am mesmerized by their beautiful colors, but am tired of watching them from the ground. I want to be floating along the San Diego coastline looking down. So, for my birthday this September I am booking a trip up, up and away!
Living in San Diego is a blessing I don’t want to take for granted. I am going to try new things, take in new sights and go to new heights.
What new activities do you want to try this summer?
Do you have any ideas for STAY-cationers? I am curious to hear how other So Cal residents find fresh ways to fill their days.
